Herbal Certificate Programs
Common Questions
Where should I start if I’m brand new to herbalism?
Start with Herbs A-Z ($25/month). It contains the Starting Path, which is where two kinds of student begin: people new to herbalism, and people who know herbs already but are new to the way we teach them here. Traditional Western Herbalism at MWIH combines traditional and folk practice with modern science, and it works through energetics, tissue states and the doctrine of signatures. Starting Path gives you that ground to stand on. From there, Herbs A-Z moves through herbs in practical groups, so you see both the single plant and where it sits in the whole.
Two more monthly memberships, each a different way in:
Build Your Home Apothecary ($35/month). Make your own medicine. Tinctures, salves, oils and syrups, made alongside Alberto Carbo, RH.
The MWIH Library ($65/month). Go as deep as you want to go. 90+ on-demand courses, 65 certificates, faculty Q&A, and Matthew Wood’s pre-publication writings, most of it available nowhere else.
When you’re ready for full certification, MWIH Year One Program is the next step. Students who spend time in the Library first come to Year One with real grounding, and they have the strongest success in it.
Join one, add another whenever you like. Cancel anytime.

How long does it take to complete each certificate level?
Each program is designed to take about one year. Months 6 and 12 are built in for rest, review, or submitting assignments. You can go at your own pace and take breaks as needed. We have students who have completed the program as quickly as 3-4 months as well as in 12 months while holding a rigorous full-time job.
Are these herbal programs intended for personal enrichment, professional practice, or both?
Yes, both! Many students begin herbal studies for personal reasons—like supporting family wellness or making herbal remedies—and then continue toward becoming a registered herbalist. You can use this training to serve your community or build your own practice.
Can I speak with someone to help plan my learning path?
Definitely. If you’re unsure where to begin, we’re happy to help. Reach out anytime and we can guide you based on your experience and goals. Our email is hello@woodherbs.com.
Will I be a certified herbalist after completing these programs?
You’ll receive a certificate of completion showing the number of accredited hours. For details of the total and breakdown of the hours see the Program information page.
Herbalism is a self-regulated field in most places, so there’s no official license. Be sure to check your local laws to understand how you can practice herbalism in your area.

Are these certificates recognized by any herbalist associations or professional bodies?
Our programs are based on the educational standards of the American Herbalists Guild (AHG). We encourage you to check with your chosen professional group to confirm whether they accept herbal certificates from the Matthew Wood Institute of Herbalism.
Are the classes video-based, written, or both?
Yes, the entire program is online. You’ll get access to pre-recorded video lessons, written materials, and optional live Q&A sessions and study groups. Recordings are available within two business days if you can’t attend live.
Do I have lifetime access to the materials?
You’ll have access to your program content while enrolled. Students have access to teachers in the Discussion section of program and we update and improve our materials regularly; these are the primary reasons access is time-based rather than lifetime. This helps us keep your learning experience current and interactive.
