Herbs and the Male Reproductive System

with Matthew Wood, MS and Phyllis D. Light, MA

Herbalism Teachers  with 75 Years of Joint Experience
as Consulting Herbalists & Herbal Authors

About this Class

Phyllis D. Light and Matthew Wood discuss the issues of the male reproductive system - a subject often overlooked in herbal teaching and literature.

They start with historical and cultural generalities. Some cultures have folk medical names for the whole complex of these male issues. This subject is ‘Elk Medicine’ in Native American herbal traditions. In Chinese herbalism, ‘kidney deficiency’ and ‘kidney stamina’ are metaphors to real conditions. In Western culture, men have distinctive experiences and attitudes towards health, aging, sexual stamina, partnership, and independence.

After generalities, they move on to specific conditions, anatomy, and physiology. They start with general structures, such as the pelvic floor, moving on to specific organs and tissues.

  • Hernia
  • Pelvic discomfort and tightness or looseness
  • Prostate. Swollen, painful, waking at night, effect on urination, bladder stones
  • Prostate cancer (PSA, biopsy, surgery)
  • The prostate drug finasteride (Proscar)
  • Erectile dysfunction, impotence
  • Lack of sensation
  • Low testosterone
  • Male Fertility (will be covered in more detail in an upcoming class)
  • Jock itch, scrotal rash, penal rash, yeast infections
  • Bed-wetting in young boys

In addition to these issues, they discuss if there is a constitutional approach to some or all of them. They share case histories from decades of clinical herbal practice - including the strange and unusual.

This class is for all levels. There is something for everyone!
